Tangerine beats up my playlist

October 22nd, 2006 Jacken 1 comment

tangerinelogo.jpgThere is this great new application called Tangerine. It takes your iTunes library and analyzes all your songs to determine the BPM of your songs. It can then create playlists using that information. The interface is beautiful and really easy to use. You can also export the BPM info back to iTunes. It’s also very apparent that I like songs with high BPM.

It’s still beta, but works great so far. Download and give it a whirl.

EyeTV and Pinnacle PCTV

October 22nd, 2006 Jacken No comments

Update: I now got a beta version of the software that partially fixed some of the problems. It still does not seem to work correctly with an other antenna.

I was out shopping yesterday with my family. And sometimes you just have to get some new gear. So I bought a Pinnacle PCTV USB DVB-T receiver. I used a computer in the store to check that It was compatible with the EyeTV software. As usual there was no Mac compatible software included with the Pinnacle hardware. But when I connected it all, I had really bad reception of the TV signal. I tried a lot of different places in the appartment (including standing in a room that has line of site of the broadcast antenna for the DVB-T broadcast) but still only got a 46% signal quality. So the video was choppy or nonexistent. Fortunately I now got a Macbook Pro, so I tried to install the Pinnacle software in Windows, and naturally I got a 100% reception and it worked like a charm. My conclution is that there is a bug in the EyeTV software. Here’s a funny tidbit, If you remove the antenna you actually get marginally better reception.

So I guess my adventures with this continues. Let’s hope the support at El Gato can help me.

Tooth

Today I had to do a visit to the dentist. Yet another tooth pulled. If I keep this up, I might just as well get myself a banjo and a pickup truck. But now I’m finally done (for now) with dentist appointments. Hurray!

MeWe World

I’ve been working on a community site for a while. If you are between 16-29 years old, go and sign up. Go check it out

As a part of our project on values and lifestyles of European, Japanese, Indian and American youth, we are creating a youth community on the internet, that will provide us with qualitative material. Young people are invited to write lifestyle diary blogs and participate in discussion groups on the net. The blog will be up-and-running by 16th October 2006. We are now looking for 16-29 year olds around the world who are prepared to participate. Do you know any people in this age span that may be interested in joining? Could you in that case refer them to Ms. Ida Hult, who is the project coordinator? I would be very grateful. Reasons for participating - Influence decision-makers around the world, politicians, companies and government autorities! - Meet new friends from different countries! - Get the chance of winning an iPod! What do they need to do? - Write a blog about their everyday-life - Participate in web-based discussion groups

Playback of DivX and AVI in Mac OS X

Finally a good solution to be able to play back DivX and other codecs directly from Quicktime Player and FrontRow. Download Perian. It’s free and works wonderfully.

Xbox 360, no way

October 7th, 2006 Jacken No comments

So after reading up on Xbox 360, I just realized that you have to pay Microsoft a monthly fee to be able to play online for the games you spent a fortune on buying. Fuck that. I’m either going to sell the Xbox 360, or install a chip. Talk about f….ng ripoff!

Audible

October 7th, 2006 Jacken 1 comment

I used to subscribe to Audible. So I was going to start subscribing again, but after checking their pricing I realized that it now costs twice as much as before.

I have a feeling that media content like music, audiobooks and films need to be cheaper, not more expensive. Case in point. I have bought more music the last couple of month from allofmp3, than I have from any source in five years. Why? Because when an album of music costs around $2, it’s so cheap that it doesn’t matter if you happen to choose a really crappy album. Compared to buying an expensive CD, where everything has to be a well planned decision. You just don’t take a change to buy an album that you know contains a good song. With cheap music you don’t even think about it. Same thing with doing backup of your music. If an album costs $2, you just buy it again if you lose it. I already bought several albums that I own, but just can’t find.

It’s a pity that Audible is going down that same route. At least they have a semi-good DRM, where you keep a kind of digital library where you can find and download books you bought.
