MAMP WordPress and Error establishing a database connection

I’ve installed MAMP on my Mac to do some changes to my blog. I tried to set the WordPress wp-config.php file to connect to localhost:8889, but got an error that It could not connect to the database. After replacing localhost:8889 to 127.0.0.1:8889 it works. My quick guess is that permissions for the root user is set to allow connections 127.0.0.1, but not localhost. Anyway, it works now.

My wp-config.php file looks like this:

define('DB_NAME', 'wordpress'); /** MySQL database username */

define(‘DB_USER’, ‘root’);

/** MySQL database password */

define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘root’);

/** MySQL hostname */

define(‘DB_HOST’, ’127.0.0.1:8889′);

Impromptu TimeMachine test

skitched-20090112-235535.jpgWhen I’m depressed I have this thing of dreaming violent dreams and acting them out in reality. The other night I dreamt that I was at the liquor store and got in to a fight with two men. I woke up with a bang when I kicked my laptop of the table beside my bed, seeing it banging to the floor. The hard drive worked for about a day, and then gave up. So I had a good reason to test TimeMachine, and it has worked perfectly! So now I’m up and running again with more free space on my computer than the old total disk space. It even seems a bit faster because this disk i 7200 RPM. 320 mb in a 2.5″. <OLD BASTARD TAG>I remember the first hard drive I used. It was a Corvus 5 megabyte drive for the Apple II in the size of a small refrigerator. I think it’s swedish price was something like $8000. Yet a big upgrade from my first “real” storage device (not counting cassette player) wich was a dual 5 1/4 floppy at a wopping 140kb per disk (yes kids, that’s 140 KILOBYTES!) And those where real floppys, because, well, they where physically floppy.</OLD BASTARD TAG>

iPhone will increase Macintosh software

Nobody talks about the fact that all the companies that will now start making programs for the iPhone will first learn how easy it is to program with Cocoa. Then suddenly you have a lot of new programmers that know how to program for the Mac as well. Yes, it’s that similar. What would stop them, now that they have inhouse knowledge to make a Macintosh version of the software? Nothing…

Tangerine beats up my playlist

tangerinelogo.jpgThere is this great new application called Tangerine. It takes your iTunes library and analyzes all your songs to determine the BPM of your songs. It can then create playlists using that information. The interface is beautiful and really easy to use. You can also export the BPM info back to iTunes. It’s also very apparent that I like songs with high BPM.

It’s still beta, but works great so far. Download and give it a whirl.

EyeTV and Pinnacle PCTV

Update: I now got a beta version of the software that partially fixed some of the problems. It still does not seem to work correctly with an other antenna.

I was out shopping yesterday with my family. And sometimes you just have to get some new gear. So I bought a Pinnacle PCTV USB DVB-T receiver. I used a computer in the store to check that It was compatible with the EyeTV software. As usual there was no Mac compatible software included with the Pinnacle hardware. But when I connected it all, I had really bad reception of the TV signal. I tried a lot of different places in the appartment (including standing in a room that has line of site of the broadcast antenna for the DVB-T broadcast) but still only got a 46% signal quality. So the video was choppy or nonexistent. Fortunately I now got a Macbook Pro, so I tried to install the Pinnacle software in Windows, and naturally I got a 100% reception and it worked like a charm. My conclution is that there is a bug in the EyeTV software. Here’s a funny tidbit, If you remove the antenna you actually get marginally better reception.

So I guess my adventures with this continues. Let’s hope the support at El Gato can help me.

Mighty Mouse, yeah right

Apple Mighty Mouse

I got a new Bluetooth Apple Mighty Mouse a couple of weeks ago, and let’s face it, Apple can not design a mouse. The Bluetooth reception is good, and so is the battery life, but it has several problems. To get it to right-click is a gamble. Yes, I know you have to lift your finger from the left side, but it still works erratically. And the side buttons is to hard to squeeze to be useful, and it feels really uncomfortable to use.
