Sync

July 4th, 2004 · No Comments

There’s been a lot of discussions about the new features in Mac OS X Tiger, but here’s what I think is great.

API for developers to create syncing with iSync Now we hopefully don’t have to wait for our PDA, phone, mp3 player or whatever to be able to sync up the addresses and calendar in OS X. Now, even if the manufacturer doesn’t care about millions of users there is an opportunity for third part developers to make the sync work. Or maybe even Open Source versions?

Core Image Giving small developers the availability to get their hands on great plugins for image manipulations. I bet there’s going to be a bunch of new innovative graphics programs from smaller developers. And instead of buying a Photoshop plug-in, you buy a Core Image plug and have it available in all supported programs. I don’t think Adobe is going to integrate support for Core Image plugs, because then, HORROR! there would be a better version on the Mac than on the PC. And we can’t have that. Anyway, now there’s a fighting chance that well see some new ways of editing digital images. All of this applies to Core Video as well, naturally.

Spotlight API The ability to extend Spotlight to be able to search meta data in other file formats.

Hopefully this is a first step from Apple to open up software like iSync to developers and giving them the possibility to extend the functionality of the system.
