I bought a cheap 8x DVD +- burner made by NEC ND-2500A. Then I installed a new firmware on it, using a win pc. Some hackers have discovered that the dual-layer drive, ND-2510A is the same drive physically as the 2500, so they made a new firmware. This firmware adds the ability to burn dual-layer DVDs (when you can buy media), removes region coding for DVD playback and also removes the speedbump when ripping DVDs. First time I have changed a drive on a Quicksilver machine but found this picture showing how to remove the old drive. And then I downloaded the driver from LaCie to enable support for Finder disc burning and iApp support.
So far I have tried to burn DVDs at 4x without problem, and also tried to burn some Audio-CDs from iTunes without problem.
Can’t wait to try out dual-layer burning.
Here’s the Windows firmware update 2510215Warning! A failure with the firmware update could render your new drive useless. You also have to remove the eject button on the drive if you install in a Qucksilver chassies.
