Cool factor

January 3rd, 2005 · 4 Comments

I see a lot of articles on the net about the iPod and why it sells. And one thing that a lot of pundits mentions is that Apple iPod has the cool factor and that this is the reason that it sells. I think that’s bullshit. The reason the iPod started to sell so well is the good user interface, the ease of use, firewire and great integration with iTunes, one of the best music organizing programs there is. And to me it’s still amazing that Apple managed to sell any iPods at all to the PC crowd. I still hear friends that are PC users that can not buy iPod for one reason only. It’s made by Apple. And Apple is crap, because their PC expert friend (who’s whole experience with Macintosh computers extends to fifteen minutes of use back in 1996) told them so.

I think it is ‘cool factor’ myself. I even referred to this in my writing a month ago. I think that A Palm PDA can do anything an iPod does, and more.

For all the “followers” its in my experience initially the cool factor but when they start using it they start to realize how far above anything else it stands, I even have a few freiends about to by Macs for the first time after being exposed to Apple and their superiority. I cant tell you how many friends I have that have tried to do things that we take for granted with a Mac, videoediting, AV Chat and so on, on a PC and their frustaration about the fucked up workflow ( if there even is one ). Showing them how easy its done on a Mac blows them away, but Apple sucks, we all know that dont we?

I can agree that the “Cool” factor could be a factor in people trying out the iPod. But for people to put up hundreds of $ for it, it has to be good. My first reaction when a friend told me he got an iPod I just shrugged. I had already owned a Achos Jukebox, and had already decided that a portable music player wasn’t for me. Slow downloads, impossible interface and so on. But then I needed a small portable hard drive, and got the iPod. Today you have to use a gun to get me to part from my pod.

I consider myself an early adopter when it comes to handheld computers. Owned a couple of Newtons and also got the first Palm. I gave up my palm when I got the Sony Ericsson p900, and I’ll probably give up the iPod when someone makes a car phone with a 20 gig harddrive in it.
