Stockholm Syndrome

January 23rd, 2005 · No Comments

The term Stockholm syndrome is used to describe a situation where a hostage starts to agree with the oppressor. It comes from a well known Swedish bank robbery turned hostage situation called Norrmalmstorgsdramat that took place in the 70’s. There the hostage was more friends with the hostagetakers than with the police. But I think that the definition is totally wrong. The reason the hostage started to befriend the bandits wasn’t because of some weird psychological phenomena, it’s because the Swedish police handled the situation like a gang of asshats. If you drill a hole in the roof and start to pour tear-gas down, I would also bond with the people in the immediate vicinity, and not the police who’s doing it to me.
