Streaming video from Dreambox to a mac

Dreambox DM7000

Being sick today and confined to bed, I thought that I’ll try something important. Like streaming video from my Dreambox DM7000 linux sattelite receiver to my Powerbook so I can watch TV in bed. I downloaded a compiled version of ggrab for Mac OS X, and tried to stream with the command /path-to/ggrab -q -host IP-OF-XBOX -o - -p 0320 0321 | /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC /dev/stdin -v 0

But my Powerbook G4 12″ 867mhz isn’t fast enough to handle both the video and audio stream. It works with just the video. If I use my Dual G4 Powermac everything works great. If I turn on de-interlacing the quality of the picture is fantastic. I wonder if a Mac Mini could handle this? I think it could. A Mac Mini and my Apple Cinema Display 22″ in the bedroom for watching TV. Maybe someday…

Hi, I stream from a dreambox DS-500 to a mac mini using ggrab, and that works fine. Full screen the mini’s CPU is loaded about 60%. I have written a command line utility to record or view TV on the mac via the box. Just in case you are interested. /Fredrik

    Hi Fredrik,

I am also a DB user and looking for solutions to intranet streaming of TV to several displays. I am also somewhat familiar with Unix (FreeBSD, Linux) and with the Macintosh. The mac Mini might be a silent and affordable solution? Could I have the details on your commandline utility, please! (I shall certainly get back to you on how it worked.) Hoping to hear from you, Lars
