I’ve been looking for a softphone for Macintosh that uses IAX, but I haven’t been able to find a good one. The EyeBeam and X-lite uses sip and has stability problems so they are not an option either. So I started to write my own softphone. It’s nice to be programming in Cocoa again. But I’m becoming old, so I have to read up on programming in Cocoa again. I have a working softphone up and running already. Well, sort of. It receives calls and you can answer and talk. But I’ve only been writing on it for two days, and most of the time has been spent on installing a Subversion system on my server. As soon as I get a polished version, I’ll put up a beta program. I’m thinking of calling the program “Breaker-Breaker!” in the old CB-radio spirit. And yes, it will have the old style analog VU indicators for bandwidth and voice volume.

You should take a look at Loud Hush (http://www.loudhush.ro/). It is OS X native and does IAX only.

Yeah, already checked it out. Looks nice, but you have to buy a licence for every user. And I will add some stuff that’s not in that program.

Do that and you are the King. Not being able to use Voipbuster…you know where I’m going.
Ran iaxcomm for 5 minutes, didn’t take longer to realise that it’s not a keeper. Even though there’s a “good” thought behind it, it’s free etc.

Since a couple of weeks - maybe even months - I’ve been checking different options for VoIP-ing on my Mac and just like you (reading between the lines, deciding to write your own), I’m getting a bit fed up with it. With the current wave of voipbuster lookalikes it’s becoming unfair that Win users can call for free all over the world and we Maccies have to pay for it.
If you need a beta tester I’m very willing to help you out. I’m running 2 partitions on 10.3.9 and 10.4.3 (because of my FCP and Digidesign stuff) and with my computer science background I’ll be quite able to fool-proof it.
Being a sound-designer hobbywise I could also provide you with nice sounds in the future maybe as my programming skills faded away since I stopped coding professionally.
