Writing Kit – The best Markdown editor on iPad

Writing Kit The best Markdown editor on iPadWriting Kit 2.0 - The quest for the best Markdown editor on the iPad.

I’ve been searching for a good Markdown editor now for a while. I mainly want to use it for writing blog posts on my private blog, but also for editing other stuff that I write. The criteria I need in a program is the following:

  • Be able to sync with dropbox.
  • Preview Markdown documents.
  • Work with folders within Dropbox, so syncing with Scrivener, my favorite writing app on my Mac, works.
  • Work well with app switching on the iPad, so I can do research on the web in Safari, and quickly switch back to the text editor.
  • Work with other tools like TextExpander touch and terminology App.

Force Syncing Mac OS X Address Book with Gmail Contacts

Force Syncing Mac OS X Address Book with Gmail Contacts

If you setup your iPhone and iPad to connect to Google as an Exchange server, you get instant push notifications of mail and sync your calendars and address book. This is a great way of keeping your Address book and calendar synced between your Mac, iPhone and iPad. And in my experience it works great. But syncing from Mac OS X can sometimes be slow to update. So I wrote this little program to force an update immediately. It’s been useful to me, so I thought I put it here if someone else needed it. It’s just a small shell script inside an Automator script, but it’s great for people that are a little bit nervous about using the terminal.

If you want to check the sync progress, just open the Console program that you will find under Utilities in your program folder.

Image editing for blogging on iPad

When I first got my iPad I thought it was great for consuming media, but not for creating it. But after a year I do most of my writing and blogging from my iPad. With a connected Bluetooth keyboard it’s an excellent tool for writing. No spinning hard drive, no fan, just comfortable silence. And with apps like Writing Kit and Blogsy, I can do all the things I need for blogging. But handling images isn’t that easy. Here’s my tips on getting your images in shape directly on your iPad.

Geotag images using an iPhone

One of the nice things about modern camera phones and even some regular cameras uses GPS to tag photos and embed the coordinates in the pictures EXIF data. But wouldn’t it be great if you could do that with your fancy DSLR camera photos as well? Programs like iPhoto, Aperture and the upcoming Adobe Lightroom 4 can show you your pictures on a map. Many online photo sites like Flickr also uses the GPS data in the pictures to display them on a map.

IPad crash – Fixed!

IPad crash Fixed!

iPad crash problem fixed.

It looks like I finally found a solution to my iPad crashing problem. My first generation iPad crashed all the time without any apparent reason. I found it on a forum and I’ve been running my iPad all day without one crash. Haven’t been able to do that since upgrading to iOS 5.01.

All you need to do is to reset all settings. Open the Settings app and under General and choose Reset. Press Reset All Settings. This sounds dangerous, but you won’t lose any data, only your settings. The machine will show a progress bar, which is normal. After the machine is reset, you should now hopefully have an iPad gen 1 that doesn’t crash all the time. All the settings for mail etc wasn’t affected by the reset by the way.

Why whould I need ReplayGain?

All albums and songs are mixed differently. So in iTunes some albums sounds very loud whilst other is rather low. This has increased in something called the Loudness War. Producers of albums soon realized that if you mix an album really hot, it will sound louder then the other songs on crappy stereo equipment. So essentially you have a lot of music in your iPod/iPhone with albums recorded at totally different volume. That’s why you have to constantly change the volume knob to correct for this. Here Apple comes to the rescue with it’s Automatic Volume Settings. Unfortunately the algorithm Apple chose to use to determine the volume of the song is made to be quick, but not particularly accurate. This mean that the songs does come out all over the place volume vise. But there is an good solution to this problem, and it?s name is ReplayGain.

The ReplayGain algorithm analyzes the music psycho acoustically and then makes an assessment on witch level the song/album should be. Unfortunately Apple haven’t embraced this techique even though it’s totally open. Shame on you Apple.

But there’s a sollution. An application called iVolume that goes though all your songs in iTunes using ReplayGain and makes sure they have the same level. This mean that you can be certain in that you won?t have ear blead when a song of Sting ends and Mötorhead comes on.

The software is super easy to use, just start it and iTunes, make sure you have ?Sound Check? enabled in preferences in iTunes. After that you just push a button.

One downside only, the price is $29.95 witch I think is a bit high. But for me It was a must, it transforms the pleasure of listening to music.
