Audible

I used to subscribe to Audible. So I was going to start subscribing again, but after checking their pricing I realized that it now costs twice as much as before.
I have a feeling that media content like music, audiobooks and films need to be cheaper, not more expensive. Case in point. I have bought more music the last couple of month from allofmp3, than I have from any source in five years. Why? Because when an album of music costs around $2, it’s so cheap that it doesn’t matter if you happen to choose a really crappy album. Compared to buying an expensive CD, where everything has to be a well planned decision. You just don’t take a change to buy an album that you know contains a good song. With cheap music you don’t even think about it. Same thing with doing backup of your music. If an album costs $2, you just buy it again if you lose it. I already bought several albums that I own, but just can’t find.
It’s a pity that Audible is going down that same route. At least they have a semi-good DRM, where you keep a kind of digital library where you can find and download books you bought.

Xbox 360

Micke, Pär and me had a gaming weekend. They dropped over to my place and played all day and night. And it was so fun that I had to get myself an Xbox 360
So tonight Micke and I cooperated in Battlefield 2. What a game. One of the great things is that the voice chat really works great. I just wish that Microsoft would add the ability to stream DiVX films from other platforms other then Windows. Yeah, that’s likely to happen. The noise of the machine is also horrendous. But I can live with that. Tomorrow it’s time to get an adapter so I can plug it in to my 23″ Cinema display that I don’t use any more. That could be fun…

I’m a lucky guy

I have been working on a web project for my new company. It’s a tracking system that I’m about to write in Ruby on Rails. The steep learning curve makes this beast a long time project. But I can see all the good stuff that’s in RoR so I feel I must learn it.

And for the first time in a long time, I’m actually looking forward to go to work. Even after I heard that we need to make a complete community site finished next month. This is actually an impossibility, as you all know.

So why do I still love this company even if the workload is getting to a point of being silly? The people that I work with. I have learned more during these few months, than I usually do in years. Yes, they are that smart.

My hopes is that I sooner or later can start to work on their intranet machines and swich over our mail system to something better.

Back from Lisbon

DSC00220
Lisbon was great. Lot of work, but also time for some recreation. Parts of it is pretty poor, but all the portugese I met was friendly and helpful. Quite a difference from home. The friendly part I mean.

Unfortunately the food at the hotel was really bland. But most of the restaurants had excellent food. Lots of fish.

All my co-workers really helped me with my fear of flying, and really supported me. Thanks gang!

Pre Dramatic stress Disorder

I’m going on a business trip to Portugal tomorrow. And I’m already nervous about flying.

We are going to give a first presentation of our new home page for the company that I work for. I’ve been working day and night on it, but it’s hard for someone who does not understand it to realize how much time it takes. And when working under these conditions, really stress me out. Back to the old “CAN’T BREATHE!” and panic attacks. This wouldn’t be much of a problem if I got to take mini brakes during the day. But there’s no time for it. If I had this job fifteen years ago, It would be the perfect setup. But I’m getting to old to maintain this stress level. I’m hoping that as soon as the web site goes live, I can start restructure there internal network and upgrade servers. Then I’m finally doing the IT Manager job I’m supposed to do.

Two of us has to give a demonstration of the new web on friday, but theres a lot of stuff that needs to get fixed. So I will probably work late tonight, and continue tomorrow on the plane.

Wich me luck!

I punched my wife in the face

Yes, it’s true. I gave my wife a knuckle sandwich.

The last couple of years when my workload get a bit out of hand, and when there’s a lot of stress, I have problem sleeping. And a couple of times when I finally got to sleep, I have dreamt about fighting, and actually punched the wall in my sleep. But this time it was no wall, it was my wife who got a fist on her cheek. She thought it was our daughter who kicked her in the face, so she turned over and try to continue to sleep. So much for my deadly fists of steel.

How do you beg for forgiveness for stuff you do in your sleep? She’s laughing about it, and teasing me. She’s never been punched in the face before, and it’s her husband that gives her the first one. I’m so proud…
