Update: this problem is solved with iOS 8. Apple has opened up the operating system, so you can install alternative keyboards on your iPhone or iPad. SwiftKey is working on an iOS version. I’m just trying out the app SwiftKey on both my iPad and iPhone and it works very well. I can’t understand why they haven’t implemented an URL scheme though. That way you could use apps like Drafts or Editorial together with SwiftKey, and then send text to and from your favorite editor when your done. Hopefully they will implement it soon. ...

Adafruit TRINKET – Mini Microcontroller – 3.3V and 5.5V versions: It’s a tiny microcontroller board, built around the Atmel ATtiny85, a little chip with a lot of power. A cool cheap little Arduino compatible board for smaller projects. The 3.3V version runs at 8MHz and the 5V version can run at 8 or 16MHz. It has five I/O pins available and comes with 8kb of memory. It can be programmed with AVRDude or the Arduino IDE after some small modifications. Looks great!

Reinventing iOS Automation: Editorial Review: Editorial for iPad, redefines the market of text editors for iOS, and, in many ways, sets a new standard for iOS automation and desktop-class apps. Editorial makes me want to work from my iPad. Editorial is my new favorite Markdown editor with amazing workflow scripting abilities and a complete Python interpreter from the programmer that made Pythonista. Now that Google is pulling the plug on Google Reader, I’ve been researching an alternative. I bought Fever, a self hosting solution. My favorite RSS app for ipad is Mr. Reader has just been updated with support for Fever, but it’s slow. So I’m giving up on Fever as my syncing for RSS and going to use Feedly instead, now that they have an API. Feedly has a very nice app on iOS but Mr. reader now also supports Feedly, so I’m going to use it instead. On my Mac I’ll just use Feedly’s web interface which is quite nice. Good to be able to find interesting articles to read again.

When trying to sync a new iPhone to my Google Apps account it seems that it’s no longer possible to use Exchange push mail, address book and calendar syncing. By signing up for their service for free I paid by letting Google rummage through my mail for later use in targeted advertising. But now they killed yet another service that I come to depend on. My trust in Google is totally gone. Now I have to spend hours setting up a mail server, getting passwords from my users and sync all accounts using IMAP. Then I have to help everyone to set up iCloud sync for the address book and calendars instead. Because Google can’t be trusted. All these problems can easily fixed buy paying Google, but why pay twice? Money AND my private life? WTF? ...
